Food

What did scripture say? What did Jesus do/say? What did the disciples do/say? You? What did Romans/Pagans do?

Eat only what God has declared fit.

⇐ ? ? ⇒

Eat what tastes good and what honours other gods.

  • Gen 8:20 — And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
  • Lev 11:8 — Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.
  • Lev 20:25 — Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, and between unclean fowls and clean: and ye shall not make your souls abominable by beast, or by fowl, or by any manner of living thing that creepeth on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean.

  • Mar 5:13 — And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
  • Not much is explicitly said about unclean food because at that time it was such an obvious thing that nothing needed to be said. The Pharisees wanted so much to catch Jesus violating even their own trivial additions to the Law, that had he or any of his disciples ever made as serious a violation as this they would have jumped at the opportunity to discredit him. It's clear that such a situation never arose.
  • Act 10:14 — But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
  • Act 11:8 — But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.

  • Because Tammuz was killed by a boar, eating ham was considered a symbol of luck. {Easter ham}
  • Rabbits and decorated eggs symbolized fertility.

Soul

What did scripture say? What did Jesus do/say? What did the disciples do/say? You? What did Romans/Pagans do?

Man is a mortal soul, subject to death and destruction.

⇐ ? ? ⇒

Man has an immortal soul.

  • Gen 2:7 — And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
  • Eze 18:4 — ... the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
  • People are mortal souls.
  • Luk 12:19 — And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
  • Act 3:23 — And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
  • 1Cor 15:45 — And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

  • People have immortal souls within their physical bodies.
  • Souls are inherently good.
  • The physical body is inherently bad.
  • Physical suffering can improve the soul.

Afterlife

What did scripture say? What did Jesus do/say? What did the disciples do/say? You? What did Romans/Pagans do?

Until the resurrection, dead are unconscious. Those in the first resurrection will live and rule on Earth.

⇐ ? ? ⇒

Spirits immediately receive perpetual punishment or reward.

  • Psa 115:17 — The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.
  • Ecc 9:5 — For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing ...
  • Eze 37:12–14 — Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves, And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.
  • Mat 5:5 — Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
  • Mat 22:32 — ... God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

  • 1Cor 15:20 — But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
  • 1Cor 15:52 — In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
  • Rev 20:4–5 — they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
  • Rev 20:13–15 — And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. ... This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.{Third resurrection and final permanent death of the unsaved.}
  • At bodily death, one's immortal soul goes to a spiritual world, either to perpetual bliss or to perpetual torment.
  • Some can make penance, and by suffering cleanse their souls.
  • Some souls become trapped on Earth, appearing as ghosts.
  • Some souls return to Earth, appearing as angels.
  • Necromancers can communicate with the dead.

Worship

What did scripture say? What did Jesus do/say? What did the disciples do/say? You? What did Romans/Pagans do?

Worship none but God, and avoid other customs, even when the truth becomes called heresy.

⇐ ? ? ⇒

Prayed to saints and angels through statues and icons.

  • Deu 12:30–32 — Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: ... What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.
  • Mat 15:8–9 — This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
  • Mat 7:20–23 — Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
  • Mat 12:39–40 — But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
  • Acts 24:14 — But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets
  • Rev 3:9 — Behold, I will make them of the {church} of Satan, which say they are {Christians}, and are not, but do lie ...
  • Rev 9:20 — ... that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk
  • Rev 22:8–9 — ... I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
  • Used statues and other images to facilitate worship.
  • Prayed to dead saints.
  • Treated relics as sacred objects with holy power.
  • Asked the Mother of Heaven for help.
  • To facilitate conversion, early Popes identified the Sun-god Apollo with Christ, and Venus with Mary. The sun-rays behind Apollo's head depicted in art work became the circular halo around Christ's, and eventually all holy people's, heads.
